It looks that Dell did have the spare parts handy and sent the technical service yesterday.
As I suspected, the failed item was the power supply, so the repair took just a few minutes.
In the meantime, I learned in Ubuntu a couple of things that may be of use for someone else.
1. MB3D runs under Wine. I didn't stumbled into any major problem to use it, except the snail speed provided by the old laptop.
2. J-Wildfire also runs very well under Ubuntu.
Thanks again to those of you that cheered me with the problem!
Cheers!

Today my Dell refused to turn on. This is my 4th nasty event with this PC -StudioXPS 910- in less than 3 years. It seems these guys are all buying shares of Apple, going peacefully to bankruptcy.

For those of you living in real countries (I live in Argentina) my PC in under a 3 year guarantee. The response to my request was: if we conclude that we have the potential spare parts needed, the service may come in the next 7 working days but, if some of those parts have to be imported, we commit to have it fixed in the next 48 DAYS!
As a result, you will not be seen me often in dA until this is resolved. I am now in an old laptop running Ubuntu 13.04 (really spectacular), but all my parameters and programs are in the Dell so no new production and regrettable not much of faving and commenting in the meantime.
Cheers and hugs!
Color picker tool
Some of you may find useful to have this tool which I use to pick colors from any image appearing in my monitor to transfer into my fractals.
You can make a nice collection of a pretty limited palette of 6 colors.
The freeware can be obtained here: http://www.blacksunsoftware.com/colormania.html
And this is how it looks in your monitor: http://mario837.deviantart.com/art/ColorMania-376661029?ga_submit_new=10%253A1370705085
Cheers!
Out on vacation
I will be out of town for the next six weeks, visiting my son and daughters who live in the U.S.A. as a miserable excuse to actually visit my grandchildren. :D
I will not have my laptop and will carry only my iPad so I will not be very active except for answering as many of your comments as possible.
I will miss the daily review of your deviations and I will miss fractaling, but you can't have it all.
See you in June again.
Global Warming +11
Please see updates at the end of the journal.
I just finished reading the book COLLAPSE, How Societies Choose to Fail or Succed by Jared Diamond.
The book presents a detailed and sometimes tedious list of reasons for which some past societies have disappeared. A major reason, or in some cases the only reason, for that collapse is the mismanagement of ecological problems. Either the problem was neglected, or was discovered but not solved appropriately or solved with the wrong response.
We are generally well informed about global warming and probably tend to simplify the problem by taking just this issue. Al Gore's "The Inconvenient Truth"
Glaciar Perito Moreno
For those of you who may be interested in seeing how this glacier breaks after having made contact with the coast:
http://tn.com.ar/envivo/especiales
The whole bridge will fall in the next 6/8 hours (probably). This event is produced every 4 years normally though there have been shorter and longer lapses.
A brief info on the glacier in Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perito_Moreno_Glacier
Cheers!
